King and Crouch start for England

by Alan the librarian

Fabio Capello has named Ledley King in the starting XI for tonight's friendly with Mexico.

Ledley was inspirational in our fourth place finish and after reporting for training everyday this week, he probably feels an assured display tonight will see him book his place to South Africa.

He is joined by club team mate Peter Crouch in a side that has a nice blend of regulars and fringe players.

England team to face Mexico

Green
Johnson Ferdinand King Baines
Walcott Carrick Gerrard Milner
Crouch Rooney

Capello is restricted to six subs so I don't expect Huddlestone, Dawson, Lennon and Defoe all to feature so out of them all, my fingers are crossed that Daws gets an opportunity to claim his first cap for his country.

Capello hates you !!

Ok, perhaps some reverse psychology?

Fingers crossed Theo Walcott starts for England at the World Cup.

How shit is Theo Walcott!!?? Lennon did more in 15 minutes then that tosser did all night.

Who wants Keane back ?

6| cobra (82.45.103.227) 2010-05-25 11:16:19

england were very fortunate yesterday against mexico, but never mind , cant really judge friendlies for true form, hope we dont meet them in the world cup though.
onto tottenham the player we really need before anything else is a world class, not good, but world class striker, because after watching games from last season, we created so many good scoring chances, and we only converted under half of them, but if we had a top class striker last season, we would have coasted getting into 4th place and been challenging for the title, im not joking, we missed so many good chances, which should have been converted to goals, especially when we played stoke , wolves etc , we all know the teams, so we go out this season and sign dzeko, and if hes got any sense he will come, because he will be playing with very good players, great manager and staff, and playing enjoyable attractive football, in a club that will become a real force in the game, the sleeping giant has woken up.

7| cobra (82.45.103.227) 2010-05-25 11:31:00

oh yes on the berbatov issue, he is an idiot and no we dont want him back, he ridiculed our club ,stroppy git, what he didnt realise was it wasnt him being good that made him play well for us, it was tottenham and their style of football, that made him look good, he totally suited our style, and the fans loved him, but what did he do, REFUSED TO PLAY for spurs and with his team mates, bet they loved that, being shunned by someone who they thought was their friend, because utd were interested, well sod him, he deserves what has happened to his career, he wasnt as good as he thought he was, and now he knows it.
he needed us , more than we needed him, he could have been a great cult hero at spurs, but now hes hated by us, and frowned upon by utd fans, worst decision of your life berbatov, and we all knew it.

8| yiddo1882 (188.221.9.148) 2010-05-25 12:00:08

Berba is a class player and I would have him back at the Lane. If Keano has re-found the hunger and form of a couple of years ago then we should keep him, another quality player.

9| Craig Grant (192.158.34.20) 2010-05-25 12:08:17

I can't stand Keane but if he can do a job in a Spurs shirt still i'd keep him. The Keane we bought back from his boyhood club is not the Keane we want though. That Keane is a sunday league player.
That said, i'd only want him as a squad player and he wants to play every game so I can't see it being a good fit.

10| Craig Grant (192.158.34.21) 2010-05-25 12:24:46

...and i'd take Berba back in an instant(if the price was under 15mill)

11| cobra (82.45.103.227) 2010-05-25 12:54:15

i loved berba when he started playing for us, but what he did to the club , the fans, and his mates, was despicable, and i do not want to have him back in our shirt, especially now were on the rise, and our club is getting stronger, why should he reap the benefits, dzeko all day long, and on the keane issue, i think he deserves a second chance, but only if he gets that prolific form back, otherwise sorry mate, youve got to go.
dzeko , turan yes please.

12| Craig Grant (192.158.34.20) 2010-05-25 12:58:26

Cobra it depends on what/who you believe. From what I recall we refused to play him not the other way round. Berba never made a secret of wanting to play for Utd and I can't blame him for wanting to go there. He never lied to us and he never told us he wanted to stay for the rest of his career. He was a foreigner trying to get to the top in a foreign country. Good luck to him. I'm genuinely sad it's not working out for him at Utd.
As for Keane, I can't stand the bloke, he really makes my skin crawl. However, if he can still be an asset to us i'd keep him. He did used to be a half decent player once upon a time. In all honesty though I think he's shot so will be leaving us in the summer if we get a decent bid.

13| yidoooooochris (195.157.37.33) 2010-05-25 13:32:05

well hello boys......long time no chat...how is life treating you granty?? i agree berba 12-15m would take him back all day long...also lets give robbie a chance.....if we could get cole....young....carrick...berba....upson....and with sandro....4th will be ours...let jj super pav.... go! yido yido

14| cobra (82.45.103.227) 2010-05-25 13:40:37

craig if your version of events is true, and mine is wrong, then yes i would certainly have berba back at spurs, because his head will not be turned anymore, and he would concentrate on his game for us, but if my version was right, he would not be accepted back.

15| cobra (82.45.103.227) 2010-05-25 13:48:15

cole no, young no, carrick maybe, berba as i said above, upson vaguely interested, by the way i have been watching brazilian football , and our player sandro, is a fantastic footballer, tough tackler, good on the ball, a very good holding player who is very respected, we have got a gem, and long with palacios we will be very equipped for next season.

16| nobby nobbs (194.116.198.179) 2010-05-25 13:54:41

not interested in eirther really. If we can get good money for Keane take it.Berbatov didnt play as much when he started acting up and we wanted to preserve him for a top price. He was a really lazy git and a sulk. He hasnt cut it with an existing CL team why do we want him back ? Perhaps Harry should roll him over and tickle him.

17| RobbieK (217.33.45.90) 2010-05-25 17:30:35

Good to see Ledley and Crouch scoring for England last night, even though the team as a whole was very poor and would surely not have won against a team who could do basic things like defend corners. Still do not understand what Walcott offers that Lennon doesn't.
As for our team, I would take Berba back in a heartbeat (for under 15m), not sure exactly what happened before he left (He wouldn't play, we wouldn't play him, who knows) but he's got the kind of quality that we need up front going into next season apart from a top quality striker, I think we also need a centre back as we may as well write off Woodgate. So in all, Out: Hutton, Jenas, 1 of Keane and Pav (maybe both), In 1 top quality striker (plus another striker in we let Keane and Pav go), a centre back and a young 3rd choice keeper.

18| nobby nobbs (82.0.227.193) 2010-05-25 19:05:13

absence makes the heart grow fonder....

19| cobra (82.45.103.227) 2010-05-25 19:29:47

what about this dzeko, and ,berbatov up front for spurs, i think theres lots of goals there, but like i said before will berbatov be wanted back after all the rubbish he put us through, we'll see eh.
i think the players going are pav, keane, jenas, bentley, and possibly ekotto, i dont agree with some of them, but these are strong rumours, but the one i would definetely get rid of first is that jackass, excuse for a football player jenas, please be true.

20| nobby nobbs (82.0.227.193) 2010-05-25 20:25:01

the reason we need another striker is consistency. berbatov no.
ekotto going would be a shame, bale playing left back would be a waste and for what? so joe cole could play left side not for me. the left looks good modric can play there as can kranjcer,an opportunity to develop some younger players for left side i would say.
Pav I would love to see him get another season, playing regularly we will see,i wish redknapp liked him.Jenas and Keane to go, possibly bentley who i thought worked hard at changing his game and did well defensively but probably wants first team football.
The thing that concerns me most are being linked to players like carrick and joe cole 2 players to replace one, luka modric must stay. joe cole is not a big signing nor is michael carrick both would see our chairman reek of shabbiness. standing up to bigger clubs and tired worn out hacks who serve their every need now that is real achievement shows real ambition. modric must stay.

21| COME ON YOU SPURS (94.30.51.94) 2010-05-26 11:25:30

Berba was poor for us until deceber jan both season he was here, he is not the same player without Keano so if you want Berba back we need to take Keane I donth think its worth in either case. I can see Keane being a bad influence on the rest if he don t get things his way and Berba just sulks. We made 4th place without either of those two lets go forward not back!

Id rather keep the Defoe, Pav, Gudjohnsen and Crouch then have Berba and or Keane back!

22| RIDDTHEYID (81.134.10.180) 2010-05-26 12:35:06

whats happening with eidur? is his loan up and he is going back to Monaco?

23| MKYid (94.9.147.115) 2010-05-26 14:31:52

Eidur is going back to Monaco but who knows if he'll stay there. Harry has said he'd like to sign him, Eidur has said he isn't happy at Monaco but Monaco have said he's not going, so who knows. One thing I'd be pretty certain of however is Harry bringing in an experianced Champions League player. It may be Gudjohnsen, it may be someone else, but I can see it happening. Someone a little past their peak who might have a few seasons left in them, small fee, maybe a bit of a push on wages but seasoned enough to bring some experiance to the squad.

24| raver (86.41.212.81) 2010-05-26 17:15:41

keane can pis@ off, saying he found his hunger again for playing football with celtic, he could not do that at spurs? what a brain dead bastar@ has he any respect for spurs. forget carrick he was average at spurs and levy got a great price for him. the hudd is just as good as him so why waste money. berba was a great player for spurs but he showed no respect for the club by talking to united before a fee was even agreed.

25| Special K (94.173.46.45) 2010-05-26 20:13:50

Who are are realistic targets and who do you want? I'd take Bellamy over J.Cole purely because of his ppace and ability to play up top, plus Cole is too similar to players like Modric and Kranjcar. I'd really like Huntelaar and another top striker (maybe Dzeko but I aint seen him play - what's he all about)? Maybe another midfielder - Sulley Muntari, Sissoko (who we were linked with in the summer) or one of the Diarra's. Maybe one to cover at the back too - unless Johnny Woodgate recovers and Walker and Naughton push on and get a chance here and there. Hutton, Jenas, O'Hara, Giovani, Taarabt, Keane, Pavlyuchenko to move on. I'd like to keep Gudjohnson too, could be a key squad player for us next year.

26| Alan (194.98.196.2) 2010-05-27 10:20:53

Above all I want a striker and Huntelaar would be ideal. European experience and within our price range. Worth breaking the wage structure for whereas someone like J.Cole is no better than what we already have. If we can get bellamy for 8m then great but with his knees I wouldn't pay more.

27| Archie (86.12.167.7) 2010-05-27 10:23:37

I wouldn't want Bellamy or J Cole there both looking for one final payday before retirment beckons. Huntelaar or Dzeko would be a good

28| raver (86.41.200.126) 2010-05-27 10:55:58

michael richards and swp if price was right. Huntelaar or Dzeko take anyone of the 2. most important proper left back so bale can play on the wing. keep Gudjohnsen.

29| yiddo1882 (188.221.9.148) 2010-05-27 11:35:16

Stephen Ireland has handed in a transfer request at City. Still in his early 20's (22 I think), good work ethic, creative, skillful and scores goals.

Whereas Joe Cole can only get worse (29 in November), Ireland can only improve.

30| COME ON YOU SPURS (80.229.43.81) 2010-05-27 11:44:01

Huntelaar was piss poor in Spain and in Italy I don t know why anyone would want him he is defo not champs league pedigree if he can t play in the respective domestic league another Kezman really. European experince lol he has failed messrably so far but still wont be cheap my guess is 15 mil plus.

31| nobby nobbs (194.116.198.179) 2010-05-27 11:50:32

huntelaar is over rated on recent form.Stephen Ireland would be good but is he needed ?

32| MKYid (94.9.147.115) 2010-05-27 12:21:12

I do like Stephen Ireland but, as Nobby says, do we need him and where would he fit in?

As for buying a LB so Bale can play LM, I don't think that will happen. Harry has stated he sees Bale as an attacking LB and the links with Joe Cole and Arda Turan suggest we're looking for a left winger (one who likes to cut in so Bale can overlap).

I haven't heard much in the way of good reports about Huntlaar, I think he's just a name being carried over from last summer.

33| Craig Grant (192.158.34.20) 2010-05-27 12:45:13

Two players he insists he won't be pursuing though, are Bolton centre back Gary Cahill and Manchester City midfielder Stephen Ireland.

"Stephen is undoubtedly a very good player but we have a lot of players who can fill that position. I like him but he won't be a target," said Redknapp.

34| Alan (194.98.196.2) 2010-05-27 12:49:37

Huntelaar s goal record is not bad. Forget Dutch league goals as we all know how easy they are but in European competitions he has 19 from 37, at Real he scored 8 goals in 20 and at AC Milan he s scored 7 in 26 games. Unfortunately I don t know how many were starts or subs but at both real and AC he was put behind bigger names. His record stands up against any of our existing strikers and having cost AC 15m, I think we could get him for 12m. His wages would be high but I feel it s worth paying especially as we would need to break the wage structure to bring in Bellamy or Cole. My only concern about Huntelaar is his ability to play as a target man. I don t know enough about his style to form an opinion around that.

35| Craig Grant (192.158.34.20) 2010-05-27 12:57:57

Alan that is just a ridiculous statement and one that is not welcome on here. Lack of knowledge is never a good excuse for not forming an opinion.

36| COME ON YOU SPURS (80.229.43.81) 2010-05-27 13:42:05

The boys confidence must be shot though he didn t get a look in Real Madrid and Leonardo wanted him deperatley at AC but obv theres is something wrong becasue he never started him, if i remember correctly he WAS AC big summer signing BTW which big names are you referring to Alan when you say he was put behind bigger names? For both clubs when bought he was bought as a starter not a bench warmer somethings wrong with the lad or why would Milan be willing to take a 3 mil loss on someone they were despearateto buy?

37| RobbieK (217.33.45.90) 2010-05-27 13:45:06

I don't see that Huntelaar is a massive improvement on Pavlyuchenko, I think he's very similar in style and ability so I don't really see that it would be worth spending 12-15m on a striker who is very similar to one we already have at the club. Strikers like Dzenko and Negredo are the type we need, someone who can hold up the play and score goals, someone Drogba-like.

38| yiddo1882 (188.221.9.148) 2010-05-27 13:57:26

At Real Madrid Huntelaar was unlucky in the fact that the manager that signed him was then sacked and Ramos took over. So when he joined he had a manager who did not want him.

39| yiddo1882 (188.221.9.148) 2010-05-27 13:59:56

If 'arry plays the one man up front and three in CM as he has indicated for next season, then Stephen Ireland would be an asset. A CM three of Modric, Ireland and Thudd would create and be a goal threat.

40| yiddo1882 (188.221.9.148) 2010-05-27 14:03:56

With reference to 'do we need Ireland', a fair point but it has to be considered how many opportunities will Spurs get to sign a player of his quality who would be willing to sign for us.

High quality competition for the CM positions will only improve players performances...whoever is doing the business plays, simple as that.

41| Craig Grant (192.158.34.20) 2010-05-27 14:09:09

Yiddo1882 as much as I would want Ireland at Spurs (you can never have too many good players) if you believe Harrys comments he's not even considering him.

42| COME ON YOU SPURS (80.229.43.81) 2010-05-27 14:42:21

Errrrm the manager never signed Huntelaar at Madrid it was Mijatovic the DOF. Regardless of that Leonardo did want him he was his number one target but he hardly plays. His confidence must be shot to hell thats not good for a forward. Real bought him for 22 mil (i think) sold him for 15 Mil to a manager and team who wanted him and now they will take a 3 mil hit to get rid of him does that sound like someone to take us forward?

43| COME ON YOU SPURS (80.229.43.81) 2010-05-27 14:47:03

Huntelaar might well be a big success in England but I think its a big risk plus he has not done anything to warrant this kind of admiration really.

44| Alan (194.98.196.2) 2010-05-27 15:58:43

I sincerely don t know the in s and out of it at AC as I don t watch Italian football. His goal record there is quite poor but I don t think many strikers in Italy achieve high goal scoring returns in comparison to England and Spain? Pato for example has scored 36 goals in 76 games. Similar ratio to Huntelaar. It s traditionally a defensive league and AC Milan in general had a poor season so that may have factored into his performance level. He also hasn t been there very long.

I don t think that argument stands anymore Baron. Players that were considered flops at WHL, have all contributed this season. The likes of Bale, Pav and to a lesser extent Bentley are held in higher regard. The reverse of that is Keane, Hutton and GDS but you can t get them all right as Arsene has shown you.

big summer for spurs to get top players in. city will def be top 4 next year, add man u and russians that leaves the rest fighting for 4th. harry is on about special signing i hope he has 2 or 3 lined up.

58| Archie (86.12.167.7) 2010-05-28 10:05:36

Just because citeh are attempting to buy these players doesn't mean they will go there (kaka!!) and if they do doesn't mean there gonna be brilliant after all spurs had no trouble beating citeh last season!!!

59| Craig Grant (192.158.34.21) 2010-05-28 10:06:41

We're relying on Wenger getting things wrong at Arsenal again this summer I think. Mind you, with the new rules UEFA are phasing in over the next few years we might just have to bide our time and wait for the rewards of being properly run.

60| Craig Grant (192.158.34.20) 2010-05-28 10:17:17

You can bury your head in the sand if you want Archie but they went from nowhere to 5th (narrowly missing out on 4th) in a season. City will buy their way in to the top 4. We have to accept that. We can't compete with that in the long run. Nobody can. An even smaller club than City managed to buy their way to the top, very recently, so we've all seen it done before.

61| raver (83.71.97.174) 2010-05-28 10:29:17

archie i would nearly back city to win prem next year. players will go there for the money. i agree with you craig i rather see spurs run right rather than 2 or 3 years of glory followed by a leeds united type free fall. we all know spurs wont get Dzeko. harry should also look at loaning top team squad players with option to buy if they perform. example that young dutch left back at madrid.

62| ARCHIE (86.12.167.7) 2010-05-28 10:44:34

Craig I'm not burying my head in the sand!! I Just think the type of player they will get will be a Mercenary!! - perform on the big occasion (maybe) but consistantly under perform i.e Adebayor. So they came 5th they still couldn't beat spurs!!

63| raver (86.41.209.104) 2010-05-28 10:55:16

archie just look at chelsea they finally got it right, it will be only a matter of time with city.

64| Perry Man (87.232.78.94) 2010-05-28 10:57:55

I have total faith in Man City not overtaking spurs next season. There's a total mis-match there. They have owners who want to sign every top striker in the world and a manager who doesn't like to attack. They also have a load of mercenaries who will not put their bodies on the line for their club.
I give you two incidents in our game at city. Tevez hits a piledriver heading goalward at a million miles an hour and King puts his head in the way and clears if for a corner.
Kaboul caresses a the ball from the by-line, Wayne bridge turns sideways to avoid it and Crouch pops the ball in the net.

65| raver (86.41.209.104) 2010-05-28 11:07:53

who is this striker Peter Odemwingie from Moscow that spurs an everton are linked to. perry man you cannot judge a team on one game, if so did you see spurs at home to stoke, wolves and hull. like craig grant said and i agree with him city will buy their way into top 4 next year.

Probably the best way to analyse city is look at Real Madrid in Spain. The negatives are they can only play 11 players at a time and they are all overpaid. The expectations also deny much hope of consistency at manager level. It won t be easy for them but let s forget them as rivals for fourth. They should/will be challenging for 1st next year. Arsenal are likely to be our rivals for 4th. I expected them to spend big before all this fabregas stuff but now I am certain they will. So I think we ll need additions as well. Not so much quantity but quality/experience.

"Probably the best way to analyse city is look at Real Madrid in Spain" Spot on Alan. They may not always win things but they will always be there or there abouts.
People who don't think City will break in to the top 4 and challenege for the title amaze me. It's going to come as a nasty shock to a few people when it happens.

The thing about Man City challenging for the title next season is, as much as I believe they have the resources to, they will have to get past Chelsea and Man United. And I find it hard to see them beating both of them over a season...

i just hope harry uses the champions league card to draw top class players to the club this summer. if not it may be a while before spurs finish 4th again. arseholes will be under pressure when fab go's because van rapist will follow him out the door. unless wenger spends big they will struggle next season. class review of english team training. walcott was put on crossing practise but he failed to get one on crouch head with 11 attempts. this fellow must be one of the most over rated english players ever. what past or present spurs players were the most over rated?

Ar sole and Dumitrescu!! and Craig grant!!!

The people who are saying City won't challenge for the title this year are the same ones who said they wouldn't qualify for the Champions League Last year.

75| Alan (194.98.196.2) 2010-05-28 14:21:57

The general consenus is that it's only a matter of time before City break the top 4. That IMO is the easy part for them. They were only 3 points off it this year. Already we are seeing they are being linked with a better class of player. Sooner or later that will at the very least achieve top 4. But they can't buy the league title. Real are testimony to that. Chelsea without Mourniho would probably have been a lot less successful too. Mancini is a winner but he needs time to learn that this league is more attacking. He tended to bottle it in the big games (especially at home).

Citeh don't have the cohesion, consistancy or stability to win the league within the next two years but they do have the cash and therefore the players to be comfortably in the top 4...once they are established, the title will come.

77| Perry Man (87.232.78.94) 2010-05-28 14:50:36

My thesis is that they may well get better players this season but that will not make a better team. They already have a four better forwards than anyone other team. They have a very talented midfield, and some good individual defenders. I would be more worried if they bought one or two world class defenders and left the rest of the players so they could gel into a team.
The ideal scenario is that they buy six or seven more world class players who will take months to gel and will moan and bitch when left out of the team.

Good article (hope the link works)

It's Arsenal fans debating why they can't fill Emirates. Might help if you're ever found in a debate with a gooner!

Just read that. Nice to see an illiterate, 'caps-lock using', fucwit representing Spurs on there...

...mind you, Ar5ena1 have their own sad-sack, fucwit of a human being representing them on here....you still here Baron?

80| Alan (87.74.138.70) 2010-05-28 18:54:01

Dan-the-Hotspurman certainly wasn't doing us any favours!

81| Baron von Wenger (193.200.150.137) 2010-05-29 08:22:41

MKYid, your spelling is that of an illiterate.

82| MKYid (94.9.147.115) 2010-05-29 11:27:49

S'ok Baron, spelling Ar5ena1 with a 5 and a 1 is an acceptable practice on here. oh and 'fucwit' needs to be spelt like that to circumvent the bad language rules.

83| Baron von Wenger (82.73.40.238) 2010-05-29 13:52:32

Now you're doing it again, fucKwit.

My dear perryman post, 77 four best strikers! a bold statement indeed, can you name them? i got tevez but then i got stuck,a striker has to score goals and also contribute to the team play or he is not a top striker. please explain.
lescott will return but they have several poor players and i think they will still have a big job on next season if we improve .
