The good news is that Harry has pledged his immediate future at WHL and in doing so, dismissed speculation linking him with the vacant position at Liverpool.
"I have one year left on my contract at Tottenham and I am not thinking about anything other than being at White Hart Lane next season.
"I can tell you that I have not been offered a new contract, but that doesn't mean I am looking to move on - far from it.
"I am loyal to Spurs, I want to stay at Spurs and I have a contract with Spurs, and I'd be happy to sign a new contract at Spurs if I was offered one, but in any case I have one year on my contract."
Why hasn t an offer been forthcoming?
On the pitch, Harry has more than justified an extension to his new deal. So it can only be an off the field matter.
Perhaps Harry s age? He s 63. However, this alone hardly seems like a plausible reason seeing as he s keen to continue and there are many other examples of managers continuing past retirement age.
Perhaps it s his health? It s common knowledge that Harry experiences heart problems which recently have left him in almost comatose state on the spurs bench. Again, however, if he s keen then why shouldn t he continue? He knows his own body.
Tax case? His court case is ongoing and reports in the spring suggested it should reach a verdict at some point this summer. I don t know the likelihood of a guilty verdict but spurs have publically come out and defended him, stating it was a matter prior to his employment with spurs.
I considered the option of conflicting diaries but it s the summer and Levy used this time to secure deals for Bale and Modric, you would imagine high on his agenda would be one for Harry who only has a year left.
It would not surprise me if this Liverpool stuff was created by Harry s people to get Levy s attention. He s the master of spin and his less than encrypted message tells us he s keen for a new deal. Managers are notoriously vain and I don t think it s a good tactic for Levy to play hard ball. Harry knows his worth and won t play games. I think after his manager of the year performance last year, he s in a position of real strength and we should recognize that.
Fingers crossed we ll have an announcement this summer of Harry signing an extension. I don t want to be going into next season with constant speculation over our manager s future.
What do you think?
Spurs saying it 'it was a matter prior to his employment' is hardly publicly defending him!!!
I think the court case is the reason.
I find it odd that a contract could not made up with provision for any external legal wranglings.
perhaps levy is waiting till after the verdict before offering harry a contract.
Could it be, that Levy is busy negotiating a deal about the new shirt sponsor?
Surely this is a higher priority right now than signing a new contract with Harry as the shirt presentation for the new season is not far away.
Expect Levy to fly out to SA and talk to HR, when the new sponsor has been found.
Obviously Harry is busy being a pundit and scouting in SA right now. They will discuss after world cup.
I think this is just a matter of time. There has been a lot happening at the club recently, new training complex, new stadium, shirt sponsor and tying down the best players. We also do not know if Levy is negotiating for players despite Arry holding his cards close to his chest and saying we are not in for anybody yet. Heard it all before, suely we will not be risking the players values rising if they have a good World Cup!!
What ever happens, this needs to be sorted, transfer tagets, champion league qualifiers, pre-season, this could be an even bigger year for us and the best way to start it is to have everything in place, forget the tax business, age or health problems Harry Redknapp deserves a top contract (hopefully 4-5 years) as he was the season s top manager. So come on Levy what you waiting for.
If Harry is convicted of a criminal offence, Spurs can sack him without compensation, so I would be surprised if that is a barrier. Although it may harm Spurs by association and cause commercial losses. But Levy was aware of this before giving him the job.
If you want to keep someone you tie them down to a contract to keep them. You can see this at every club. Leaving a manager in his final year is a risky approach. So maybe THFC are considering their options and maybe thinking of a different manager to come in during the summer.
There are a lot of managers who would come to WHL - Hodgson, O'Neill, former managers like Hoddle and George Graham might be interested, or possibly someone from within the club, and Juande Ramos is currently available I think.
PL - a new manager to come in this summer?? Juande Ramos is available?? Glenn Hoddle? George Graham?? - You need your computer taken away from you to save the rest of us valuable time.
PL - YOU must be related to baron van bender!!!
okay guys i just put some names up there and i see that you did not so who would be your choice to manage Spurs if Harry dont stay?
I was always under the impression Harry was only to come and lay the foundations at the club, a couple of years to get the team up there before we got some sort of uber-manager who would lead us on to global domination...well, that's how some put it.
Dalgleish has done his old friend Harry a favor in mentioning him in regard the Liverpool job, maybe even encouraging Levy a bit but I'm sure Levy and Harry will sit down and discuss everything in due course.
If it ain't broke then don't fix it, that's my view on the current situation with Harry Redknapp, he's been our best manager since i can remember. From bottom to 4th place finish in 18 months. He should be offered a new contract asap.
Guys, What do you think of Radamel Falcao and Iaquinta the latest strikers spurs have been linked with?
Have you seen who Chelsea are releasing?!
If this was Football Manager I'd have Cole, Ballack and Belletti!
dont like Ballack myself MK, I feel he is overated.
Hey Archie. Is he Mark Falco's kid with extra a for attitude. If so sign him up. I'd also take Ballack MK. Proven European Experience.
Ballack is Bollocks, Belletti is shit and Cole is greedy, do we even need the latter, for me id rather have who weve already got, Lenon. Bently Righthand side, Modders ,Kranjar and Bale on the Left Fuck the Chelsea rejects we dont even need them.
I'm not saying we should get those 3 but, as I said, if this were Football Manager (or CM4 as I used to play) I would snap up 3 experianced quality players like them without a moments thought. It does amaze me however how some clubs would sell their chairmans dog for players like them, yet Chavski can afford to let them walk out of the door for nothing!!
..and then sell them on MK, nice little bit of profit that can be thrown at Santos for their latest wonderkid.
Harry has one year plus one year extension clause at our discretion in his contract (same as we do with most of our players). So no worries there. Cole I would take Bentley, Jenas, OHara to go. On other tranfer news Sunderland have signes some South American RB so looks like will be stuck with Hutton, personally i d give RB to Kaboul who I think did expetionally well there for us in the few games he played and also played the position at Pompery when Glenn Johnson was sold.
Cole's gone to Arsenal
Just watched the Germany vs England 1990 semi fianl on ESPN Classic.
Commentator said after Waddle missed last pen, "And Stuart Pearce is in tears in the center circle, I thought he was a hrad man?"
No sympathy! :-)
hopefully england knocked out in group stage, spurs players will get rest before champ league
I'm getting so pi55ed off with the hype I'm starting to look forward to England getting knocked out. Honestly, I went to B Q today for some featheredge boards and saw a 'three lions tape-measure' and a 'union flag wheelbarrow'...FFS!!
Miserable MKYid c unt
COYS
I have to say I'm with MKYid on ths one. I'm going to have to go to BandQ myself to see a fecking union flag wheelbarrow!!! ...FFS indeed.
I'd like England to do well of course I would. But a union flag wheelbarrow. I ask you. firstly why??? and secondly what fecking idiot would buy one!?!?!?!
as for us.......lets hope Harry is scouting right now. I think he will stick to what he has already said. Any number from 1 to 5 out. only 2 in. But 2 big ones who will add something.
COYS!!
its not english supporters fault that most of home scot, wales and ireland want england to get beaten. its the sports papers fault. were all still sick of hearing about 1966. hurst is the most annoying cun@ that ever walked on two legs. mdb i think spurs need a bigger squad this year more than ever so if they sell 3 or 4 then they need at least 6 in, an needs 2 of them to be starters like you said big name players
We may need a bigger squad but getting rid of 3, 4 or maybe even 5 wont really effect the squad that finished the season, what I mean by that is OHara, Hutton, Keane. Tarrabt and Dos Santos can go as the were loaned out last season any way plus Jeans who was Injured. Obv if Keane goes and we don t make the Gudjohnsen deal permanent we will need a Forward. Yes id like atleast 2 maybe 3 players in but i still think we can off load about 5 maybe more and still have a strong enough squad. Infact to bring in 3 players we might have to get rid of a few more than 5 due to the squad restriction for next season.
Why do you have to buy stuff to support England? It's nationalism commodified, must buy the official beer, chocalate bar, wheelbarrow to be patriotic. I prefered it when most people would cross the street if you were a football supporter. My favourite World cup: 1982 Spain. No one was bothered except football supporters.
This is my point ACS. I'm English, I'm proud to be English and I want the team to do well but in the last 10 years or so the EVERYONE has jumped on the bandwaggon. Apparently my usual level of support isn't good enough, I need to be buying the official match ball (as stocked in every square fucKing inch of Tesco), I need the official beer, chocolate, washing powder, LCD TV, HDTV subscription and every other concieveable item 3 lions can be plastered on! Why are we the only fucKing country that measures the time from our last world cup win in 'years of hurt'? Every 4 years it's the same old shit about '66, Moore and Hurst, iffy linesmen and everything else.
Like most, I was supporting England when it was considered a yob's game and I'll be supporting England when, hopefully, football-fashion is over!
i think England will do well because of the injuries. When Capello has switched players at half time during numerous matches it was the less fancied players that gelled best. Perhaps they were more hungry who knows, what i do know is that supdupa's tend to let you down at international level.
I think England will get to the final.Carlton Cole FFS he isnt good enough, the game has got quicker and Carlton hasnt he is no good with his head and his link up play does not merit a Top 4 team. This is a shame as he can hold the ball up.
I liked the way Cole linked up with Defoe in the England/Holland game and he started the season in blistering form (unplayable against us) but he went off the boil big style and was booed by his own fans. Probably not the quality we are looking for. Forlan looked a class above tonight but he's 31.
Forlan looked like the player that united had! snatching at everything and that other player looked like crap too.
I thought his approach play was very good. He looked a constant threat and a scorer of all kinds of goals. He's got an excellent goal record but for some reason people can't forget his spell at UTD. You're right about Saurez though, looked pretty useless.
Suarez reminded me of Defoe. He looked lively, could well have scored given half a chance and was always offside.
Did you know we've been linked with over 70 players since the season ended...if I could be arsed I could even list them!!
I am sure Robert Green was one of them!
I believe he was...but on yesterdays showing I'd be more than happy to remove him from any list linking him to Spurs.
And to think Gold and Sullivan expected Green to have a blinder so they could sell him for big money!! It looks like Green has found his level at WHam.
After hearing for years about how West Ham won England the World Cup, I'd be very interested to hear what they make of their contribution to this season.
I thought the spurs lads had a mixed game. King was comfortable until the injury. Lennon is not at 100% yet. He took the safe option on a few ocassions. For me the game showed just how wasted Gerard has been on the left.
Lennon doesn't seem to have the same confidence with England as he does at Spurs. At Spurs he seems happy to have a go a bit more because he's one of the main dynamics within the team, with England he seems to want to play it too safe, maybe just to ensure he doesn't get dropped!
The problem lennon has with playing for England is that glenn johnson can not pass the ball up the line, if you watch johnson he runs with the ball cuts in and hits the first striker and he does it every game, lennon is coming to deep to recieve the ball and by the time he gets to the defender he's fuuuuucked.
Only the fist game but it all seemed a bit too well planned with no individual skill allowed.Drab.
I believe nerves have played their part in the first round matches. Lennon was probably not the only one who chose the safe option. Hopefully we'll see some better games and those bloody trumpet thingys removed! It was funny at the start but all the games have the same mind numbing buzzing sound. If I wanted that, I'd watch national geographic!
Buzzing? It sounds to me like an Italian traffic jam, just loads of bloody tooting! Vuvuzela's I believe they are called. The stupid things are making the drab matches even more painful to watch...mind you they wouldn't be so bad if they drowned out the commentators!
its like a never ending bagpipe
Got to go with...
-------------James-------------
Johnson Carra Terry Cole
-------------Barry-------------
-------Gerrard Lampard------
Lennon Rooney Cole
for Algeria game.
This bloody new ball...it's a joke how high it bounces off the ground. If it's designed to have more goals in a game, there's no chance with it being so light. Players keep ballooning it over the bar!!
why do you think Cole Johnson were soo restrained in getting forward?? it affected what is our strength.
Green....well I'm afraid England goalkeepers are always prone to such lapses. we had enough good players out there to make the game safe without worrying about Gereen's mistake.
Spezza I think your side is about right. (for me Daws is too similar to Terry). But Gerrard behind Rooney maybe Capellos future thoughts. Heskey/Crouch should be good enough to get through the group games.
Lets hope it was first game nerves and we can play good attacking football and win the next 2.
I don't know why everyone's getting there knickers in a twist about the game. Plenty of world cup winning sides have drawn there first group game. Italy 1982 and 4 years ago (against usa) England 1966
so I think a little perspective is needed.
I think Capello will adopt that formation in tougher games. I think 433 is perhaps a little too defensive against Alergia and Slovakia.
did anyone see the Terry interview where he said Ledders told him he felt something go. ....he told him around the time when Gerrard scored!!
so less than 5 minutes into the game.
I hope all these WC players will be ready for our CL qualifiers!
Alan I think you pay the price somewhere for having good players. we want our players to represent their countries. But with that means more games at time when others rest.
mind you..saying that Rooney would play every day if he could!
I'm sure they'll all be fit and ready to go for the CL qualifier!!
and lets hope they all shine for their countries too
they'll be buzzing for us next season
Same old boring England.
England are the Aston Villa of international football.
Despite possessing lots of talented players, they are often one dimensional, lacking in creativity but full of endeavor.
You d only really watch them if they supported them or they were playing someone you supported.
Ah Steady on Alan. They're bad, but to compare them to villa is a slight too far. Seriously though, Spezza's line up looks about right to me. It's definitely not defensive. That team should be able to get to the quarter finals. They will then be underdogs from there on in but one good game, one lucky decision and they could be in the final. Then lose it on penalties.
Yeah Alan, how could you compare England to Villa? At least Villa have the decency to keep Heskey on the bench...
Haha, Scary to think that Heskey looked one of England's better players!
I like that 433 formation. My only reference really is that when utd play poor teams in the prem they revert to 442 and liverpool were criticised a couple of seasons ago for sticking with 433 when playing at home against weaker sides. The next two group games are very winnable. England have done well in qualifiers against poorer sides playing 442 and just for those games I wouldn't change it.
My team for the next two games:
James
Johnson Carragher Terry Cole
Lennon Gerrard Barry J.Cole
Heskey Rooney
I would bring back James because I didn't feel he did much wrong to warrant being dropped (unless he's injured). I would keep Heskey as like Defoe, Rooney appears to play better alongside a big striker. I would drop lampard as he's never done much for England (Gerrard for me is the better player) and we need one defensive-ish minded CM in there.
Apparantly Green has looked really good in training yesterday. They did some work on him to try and rebuild his confidence and sharpness. He had 4000 shots taken at him and he didn't concede a single goal !!
Today both Robert Green and Emile Heskey will be back training with the first team.
I don't really see the point in playing wingers when we have attacking full backs. So I would drop Lennon. I'd go with your team Alan apart from this would be my midfield.
J Cole Lampard Barry Gerrard
without changing too much I'd go with Alan's starting 11
Barry can sit. the Cole sisters seem to do well together. And Gerrard's real strength is coming from the middle.
there is still the issue that Lennon cannot find the right balance to play with Johnson. Its a little like having Hutton behind him!
going into the next rounds I'd play Gerrard behind Rooney.
JC, Barry, Fat Frank Lennon.
what about the story that the Germans have been using the WC ball all season in the Bundesliga.
and that it was available to any other country from March of this year.
having watched them play their movement was clearly something to do with their result. ....but knowing the ball may have assisted a little!
What is the point in playing Rooney and Heskey? Rooney comes too deep to recieve the ball meaning Heskey is the only one up front and he's bloody useless. I would think Defoe and Heskey would be a better bet as Defoe will hang around up front feeding off Heskey in the way that such a partnership is supposed work. What is the point in having Heskey playing his 'for the good of the team' role when eveyone is behind him? We need someone up front who can score goals but 'Roon of the Rovers' is everywhere except up front and his strike patner is inept. It comes as no surprise our goal came from a midfielder...
FINALLY someone with the nads to say Rooney could and maybe should be dropped for the sake of the team. Fair play to you MK...i'd have said it myself but didn't fancy a barrage of abuse.
The theory behind playing Heskey is that he forces defenders back, occupies players so Rooney has more space when he drops deep. He s effectively there so Rooney can be a better player. He s not judged by his goals/contribution but Rooneys. I don t think Capello has ever tried 433 with Rooney on his own because Rooney s record with Heskey has worked for him. However, I don t think it s worked against a top nation. I wouldn t like to see Defoe and Heskey because the trajectory of the ball will be even higher. Aimed for flick-ons rather than the current Heskey chest down option.
dropping Rooney...well there's an interesting topic.
I think he's a great talent. And when he's on the ball in and around the box I think we can score.
the others don't fill me with that belief.
and the only one supporting behind Rooney really is Gerrard.
Lampard, Barry, Lennon, JCole, SWP will rarely make runs ahead of the forwards (especially when the forwards are deep).
Someone needs to get the shakles off these midfielders. Or have they got mortgages on their own bit of the pitch
actually mentioning SWP...at the weekend someone wrote....
...."SWP - like a one trick pony without the trick"
sums a lot of them up
We don't need Rooney dropping deep, we have Lampard and Gerrard in the middle doing the midfielders work (and going to great lengths to prove they can play together!). We need someone who can score goals up front. Honestly CG, I'd have Rooney dropped if it ment a better team...but how often have England had the problem of the best players not making the best team?
mdb, the point you made is half the problem. Gerrard is the only one supporting Rooney. Gerrard only has eyes for Rooney, given the choice between spraying the ball out to the wings or passing to a marked Rooney, Gerrard will pick Rooney every time. Even if he does decide to spread the play, instead of releasing it straight to the wings i.e Lennon with a crossfield pass, Gerrard will play it to Lampard who will then pass it out wide, sure it slows to passing and allows the opposition time to get across, but it 'proves' Gerrard and Lampard can play together...
MKYid it could be argued that Rooney is the only one finding space but I get your point about Gerrard/Rooney.
It amazed me that ACole and Johnson sat back and didn't get up the pitch. And that SWP came on instead of JCole on the left. And that Milner started for that matter.
It just seems that when we get to touraments the management make strange choices and the players retreat into their footballing shells.
Its just painful watching England
Even Germany were quite good to watch. And thats saying something
It seems obvious to me that we should be playing a 4-2-3-1 with Lampard-Barry in CM, Lennon-Gerrard-J Cole behind Rooney up top on his own. Most of those players spent the season playing in those kind of positions rather than 4-4-2.
BAE was shocking yesterday against japan his attempt at blocking the cross for japans goal was awful. as soon as spurs get rid of him the better.
I have no clue as to what Capello was thinking regarding the left side of midfield and not either starting Joe Cole, or at least bringing him on when Milner went off. I can sometimes see the logic in decisions made in club football, sometimes I can't...but international football management it seems, is a complete mystery to me.
Capello is always saying that he wants his players to play the same way as they do in PL football. But they just don't.
It seems as soon as you pull an England shirt on you hold your ground and don't leave a space. and therefore they don't attack with the same power and pace that they would for their PL club
except that all the good internatioanl sides do play like that.
or maybe its just because the 'other' nations that play in the PL teams are actually the players who dictate the games. not the english ones
There seems to be an element of fear in the players, whether this is because they are worried about losing their place in the side, or whether they are worried about being crucified, disembowled, hung, drawn, quatered, shot, stabbed and generaly mauled by the media, is anyones guess.
until they gag all the 1966 team and let present players get on with it. its like all the old liverpool tossers talking crap all the time just putting extra pressure on current pool players but for spurs sake long may they continue that. an yes i agree with above english players afraid of making mistakes due to paper pressure. only one way to deal with papers ban their reporters if they start taking piss out of any player. no player in the world go's out to play a bad game for his country, their is pride in wearing the jersey and it is sad to see players getting taken to pieces over a poor display for their country.
The media in this country is beyond a joke, most football correspondants/jouralists have never ever played the game at a respectable level, yet because they got a BTEC in journalism from some minor polytechnic they feel they are qualified to publicly humiliate a professional player.
In the case of newspapers it's all just sensationalism to sell old news but it is damaging to a cause that the newspaper previously claimed to support.
Power without Responsibility best describes the British press.
I hope England get the bit between the their teeth close down the opposition and attack with pace getting forward quickly in the centre of the park.
Speaking of the press. Wheres WHUFC woth our early snippet of the fixtures. 10am tomorrow. Only looking forward to them now coz the WC is painful to watch at present.
'with'
Speaking of west ham, they seem to be targeting some decent players. If I was a hammer I would a little concerned over their motives to sign for west ham. Henry and Reqliume (spl) could all be looking for one last payday.
Jesus MKYid, I've heard it all now. Drop Rooney because he doesn't play well with Heskey!! Please tell me that's not what you were suggesting.
You are right about the Journalists though. They are a disgrace. But you have to ask if they write these stories to sell papers there must be an appetite out there for this gunk. Remember the Sun is the best selling "newspaper' in England.
It's more drop Rooney if his game doesn't suit the formation Capello is trying to play PM.
Any formation that includes Heskey over Rooney is utter madness.
The comforting thing is that England are not the only ones that have started the competition slowly. It seems the weight of expectation has affected all the nations bar Germany who are probably benefitting from youthful naivety. Let's hope we get better, even in the way of entertainment, now that the first round games are (nearly) over.
At club level I think the manager should have a formation and mould players around it. However, at international level you have to use what you have and therefore mould a formation around your best players. Especially when option B is so much worse than option A. If 442 is not suiting Rooney and Gerrard (Englands best two attacking players) then I would be inclined to scrap it.
Heskey is apparently the all important player! He's the striker that can't shoot but is kept in the starting 11. If Heskey is so damned important and Rooney isn't the best partner for him, then drop Rooney. Capello decided Heskey's all round 'selfless play' was enough to include him so why not play him with a poacher such as Defoe so he can at least have a partner up front?
I can think of two soloutions to this.
1) What Alan said. We scrap the 4-4-2 and play more to the strengths of Rooney and Gerrard.
2) If Rooney can't play the strikers role in a 4-4-2 then we scrap Rooney and play to the strengths of the rest of the team.
Greece won the Euros by playing as a team. They had no individual to mould the team around.
Build a team with better players than Greece had and we would be a better team than we are now doing things the way we're doing them. Shoehorn in players because they're considered to be too good to be dropped and we end up looking like a very average team that has no cohesion but will generally beat snmaller teams because we have better players but will get mauled by better teams because we're not a good enough'team'. We're Martin Jols Tottenham.
I am only assuming here but I think Gerrard and Rooney would prefer to play 4-4-1-1 or 4-3-3 (whatever you want to call it). You look at the majority of England's players and they seem to suit this approach. It's also a system adopted by the majority of successful teams at international (Spain, Greece, Germany etc) and club level (UTD, Chelsea, Inter). So it appears (to me at least) that England can achieve both a system that is successful and suits the best players. Capello, however, thinks 442 is the way to go. I can't remember when he's tried something different. If he wasn't so bloody successful, I'd call him old fashioned.
man city at home first game
Brum at home last game
I don't think we could of got a better opening game... Everyone will be up for it.. We are their bogey team.. They will have new players who haven't gelled together.. We could hit the ground running (if we win)... If it was someone like Wolves, everyone would turn up thinking we've won already... and we know what happens there.
we ll also have our eyes on the CL qualifier a few days later....
I fancy City will be up fot it after our win at eastlands but I feel we can beat anyone at home.
