Wigan vs Tottenham - Match Preview

by Alan the librarian

Oh no it's Wigan. If there's one team outside the top 4 I would not want our out-of-sorts Tottenham to play at the moment it's Wigan away. This game is a recipe for disaster. Let me remind you of the ingrediants:

9-1. After suffering the humiliation of THAT rugby score, Wigan are likely to be desperate for revenge.

Lennon. Our chief tormentor in the 9-1 game is not match fit so whether he makes the bench or not, we probably won't get a repeat performance from our 'Linford'.

Pitch. Wigan's pitch is not designed for football. It's a rugby pitch. Expect Crouch to play and lot's of long balls.

Fans. Rumour has it there'll be some at JJB. That and the sky camera's means we are likely to see more Jekyll than Hyde from Martinez's unpredictable side. So we'll have Wigan fans cheering on their team and ours singing for the Russian on the bench.

Harry. I don't know if anyone else has noticed but he hasn't been himself lately. Spending much of the game melting into the chair like wax on a burning candle. Wake up son!

Form. We stink at the moment.

I don't paint a very positive picture and I am sorry but I have been watching football and especially Tottenham for nearly 20 years and this has got a Wigan win written all over it. That's why Sky have bothered to go to Wigan for once.

I hope I am wrong.

should harry let Pavlyuchenko leave Tottenham for Lokomotiv Moscow?

2| Ruzz69 - Latics fan (194.176.105.45) 2010-02-18 11:10:54

Hi,
Just a few points. The badge you have used is our old one and Latics now play at the DW stadium, not the JJB. It was renamed last year !

3| anon (195.99.0.2) 2010-02-18 11:17:27

"9-1. After suffering the humiliation of THAT rugby score, Wigan are likely to be desperate for revenge."

Like we were supposed to be desperate for revenge against Wolves?

4| Dublin Spurs (137.191.238.232) 2010-02-18 11:17:53

I agree about Arry and his dimeanour on the bench. He should be up and at em if they are not performing. See Ferguson on Tuesday in Milan havin a go at Evans. " F----N wake up you so and so". He is older than Arry but still has the passion. Has Harry lost his desire?Wigan is aan opportunity to get back on track, especially away from the Lane. More passion from us please.

5| Costa Cockney (83.36.53.40) 2010-02-18 11:59:17

Start training on Southend on MUD,it will resemble Wigans pitch ! Play the strong players, light weights no go. Wasnt it good last night to see a frenchman(Wenger)unhappy with the ref(Henry),remember the cheat an ex-Gooner!We Spurs fans believe in Costa Blanca, top 4 is not out of reach the Cup Final. Corluka must play on his toes, falls asleep to often!

6| YiddenAgenda (62.77.175.114) 2010-02-18 12:16:04

Oh no Alan got his facts wrong -)
Man, you spend long enough on google you think you'd know this stuff!

7| Alan (87.74.138.173) 2010-02-18 12:21:41

Raver, it's a difficult one because Pav is essentially the same situation as O'Hara. If we let him go we could end up regretting it.

8| Simon (148.106.128.38) 2010-02-18 12:22:23

Alan... ATTENTION TO DETAIL !! ATD. Come on son.

9| gee (60.241.126.18) 2010-02-18 12:24:02

the pitch is farkn horrible, can see a 0-0 for this one.

10| Alan (87.74.138.173) 2010-02-18 12:28:46

Sorry fellas, let the team down on that one.

In my defence we can't use the new badge as we don't have permission for that image - I am sure it's a beauty though. No excuses with JJB/DW. Yellow card!!

11| davspurs (80.47.222.39) 2010-02-18 12:31:33

Its should be called WD not DW IF ever a pitch needed WD forty sprayed on it is Wigan'. The pie Eaters will be energized like all the desperate teams one good point they are not in the bottom three the bad point if we beat them they could be .I watched there beach football game and it was dreadful and the funny thing Bolton ans Wigan looked normal speed i bet they wont be on Sunday they will be speedsters especially if they train with there Rugby friends next door

12| Craig Grant (192.158.34.21) 2010-02-18 12:50:34

How is 9-1 a rugby score? Is that even possible?

13| YiddenAgenda (62.77.175.114) 2010-02-18 12:50:51

davspur - how come when other teams have a good game against us its energy irregularities?
Was there not suspicion in your mind of our 2nd half against wigan last time round?
It can be our luck all the time that its the other teams against us can it?

14| YiddenAgenda (62.77.175.114) 2010-02-18 12:51:43

can't

15| YiddenAgenda (62.77.175.114) 2010-02-18 12:53:05

Ha ha Alan ballsed up again.
Does nobody proof read your posta Alan?

16| YiddenAgenda (62.77.175.114) 2010-02-18 12:53:51

Shite. Its catching. posts not posta. Damn1

17| Craig Grant (192.158.34.21) 2010-02-18 12:55:34

Push and Run is losing all credibity by allowing Alan to post articles. Davspurs makes less errors and he's a babbling moron !

18| Alan (87.74.138.173) 2010-02-18 13:21:16

"Shite. Its catching. posts not posta. Damn1"

Does anyone proof read yours Yidden?

19| Alan (87.74.138.173) 2010-02-18 13:28:41

Davspurs has the benefit of isotonic drinks

20| PeckhamYid (82.110.109.214) 2010-02-18 13:50:59

I don't get Davspurs point about players being "Energised". Lucozade and all generic isotonic drinks are perfectly legal mate, you can buy them in Tesco's don't you know. I don't care if the players are "using" too much or are "addicted", they're bloody drinks you idiot! If players want to use sugar to boost there energy levels, that is fine, I would rather that than actually being on proper drugs, although Crouchie should take steroids, with the added muscle and roid-rage attitude, he could be some player!! Instead we have a beanstalk who gets blown over by the fans behind the goal.....then smiles!! Don't smile until you have won Peter!!! 10-4 over!

21| TMWNN (94.79.164.83) 2010-02-18 14:25:08

I think when Davspurs talks about 'energised' footballers (and let's be honest, when doesn't he?), he's actually referring to taking substances much 'harder' than your average energy drink.

The preferred method of delivery of this 'hard' drug among the players - especially Jenas - is in the form of a rectum suppository.

There are issues with this method though, as a source close to the club has revealed: 'Jenas was quite literally shitting Duracell batteries at half time against Wolves and 'arry had no option but to sub him for the 2nd half'.

22| raver (86.41.212.206) 2010-02-18 15:11:57

give it to jj any bit of luck he will od

23| MKYid (90.218.59.208) 2010-02-18 16:52:06

No such luck Raver. He'll probably play a one off blinder and not get dropped for the rest of the season in hope he does it again.

24| Perry Man (83.147.129.227) 2010-02-18 19:11:06

On a separate note I see young Terry Dixon has been named in the latest Ireland Under 21 squad. Hope its another step on his recovery.

25| Craig Grant (86.143.71.252) 2010-02-18 19:58:42

That lad had buckets of potential but staying fit and staying with us would have seen him ruined. The best thing for his career was getting so badly injured we let him go.

26| mdb (62.60.98.133) 2010-02-19 10:24:53

surely we can beat Wigan away. even on a sunday league football pitch.
COYS!!

27| Alfie Conns Sideburns (92.239.161.55) 2010-02-19 10:43:27

Thought we were much better 2nd half against Bolton, maybe that's the corner turned.Need Lennon back though.

28| MKYid (90.218.59.208) 2010-02-19 12:33:08

Pompey are asking FIFA, the FA and Premier League if they can sell some of their players outside the transfer window in order to stay afloat. I suppose this begs the question will other clubs be allowed to buy their players outside the window? And, who will Harry buy in order to do his old club more favors?

29| mdb (62.60.98.133) 2010-02-19 12:42:18

interesting MKYid as it could open a can of worms. as much as I like Pompey (not fussed to be honest!) the transfer window is there for a reason.
Having said that if it helps get rid of the window then I'm in favour.

I read an article (possibly Steve Bice!)on the transfer window and the fact that is stops players earning a better living. as they cannot move when they like.
just as you or I would move jobs whenever we like should we wish. players can't.
Is that a legal restriction on them???
who knows.

.....as for Pompey selling players...lets get O'Hara back.
James possibly as back up to Gomes.
Belhadj Diop are okay I would say
other than that I'm not too keen on the rest.

30| archie the bald (213.166.17.10) 2010-02-19 12:44:53

What about Dindane, Quincy, Boateng Wouldn't they be worth a look at??
NOT!!!!!

31| mdb (62.60.98.133) 2010-02-19 13:09:39

....thats was Bruce not Bice

32| Gray Man (77.86.106.112) 2010-02-19 13:11:20

Just sell all the players to a ruski club, no need to open window then.

33| wert (81.111.219.117) 2010-02-19 13:13:26

I dont think pompey should be allowed to sell their player's regardless of the situation their, if say liverpool bought utaka and he went on a scoring marathon and because of that cost us or anyone else a champions league spot then we could have a tevez saga on our hands. as much as its a portsmouth problem its also the fault of the premier league and they should bail them out til the end of the season.

34| Simon (148.106.128.38) 2010-02-19 13:18:01

Well if Pompey were allowed to sell players, it would keep them alive but probably guarantee relegation...But why would clubs pay for them? We would just sit around waiting for them to fold then take them on for nothing....No one pays top whack for products that they know are gonna be going for free soon enough...

35| Alan (87.74.138.173) 2010-02-19 13:51:16

Interesting comment from Harry on Ledley King

He said: "Hopefully Ledley will be available but it's a juggling act with him this week because we've got three games and he can't play Sunday, Wednesday, Sunday. We'll have to decide how we go with him."

I guess we'll see based on his use of Ledley this week which one he views as a priority, league or FA Cup?

36| Alan (87.74.138.173) 2010-02-19 13:54:12

Personally I would play him against Wigan as if he was saved for Bolton in the cup, he would effectively miss the Everton home game as well. Two prem games or a cup game against Bolton at home? What would you guys do?

37| MKYid (90.218.59.208) 2010-02-19 13:56:20

The flip side is, Pompey go under and any points teams have from beating/drawing with them are erased...I can't be bothered to do the maths with all teams but Liverpool (who Pompey beat) would then be 4 points clear of us. As for how that would then affect the FA cup is anyones guess.

38| Alan (87.74.138.173) 2010-02-19 13:57:55

On the pompey issue, I am no accountant but why haven't they gone into administration. Is it because they feel they can avoid relegation if they escape the nine point deduction? If that's the case, I don't see why the PL and it's clubs would want to help them. If their case is beyond administration then spurs should help them as if they go the 3 points we gained would be wiped off and Liverpool (who lost against Pompey) would be dancing!

39| MKYid (90.218.59.208) 2010-02-19 13:58:31

Play Leds in the league and Bassong in the cup.

40| Alan (87.74.138.173) 2010-02-19 13:58:40

Haha MK looks like you beat me to it!

41| Shelfside (62.190.20.22) 2010-02-19 14:32:48

So who you guys think he will start with upfront on sunday? As the pitch is sh!te.. For me I think he will go with Crouch/Defoe again - But hopefully he will change crouch for Eidur on weds? Knowing harry he will play crouch for both!

42| Perry Man (87.232.78.94) 2010-02-19 14:34:54

Play Bassong in the league and Bassong in the cup. This chopping and changing is not doing the backline any favours.

43| mdb (62.60.98.133) 2010-02-19 14:36:48

or just play Ledders all thwe time until he is really broken. then play Basson forever (or until Woody's back. ......ha ha....until Woody's back!!. ha ha ha...making myself laugh now!)

44| wert (81.111.219.117) 2010-02-19 16:27:02

Play Crouch at the back!

45| riddtheyid (81.134.10.180) 2010-02-19 16:51:05

We kept 5 clean sheets on the bounce with Daws and Bassong, then we changed it when Ledley was fit and its got worse ever since

46| Alan (87.74.138.173) 2010-02-19 18:40:31

It's look as though Pav will start one of the games this week. Given the pitch I wouldn't bother on Sunday but maybe Bolton at home. Cup competitions seems to bring out the best in him.

47| nobby nobbs (82.0.227.193) 2010-02-19 19:08:36

yep believe it or not players get the hump when they are doing well and then get replaced by a relic, especially a pampered lot like footballers. Another example of poor management.Classy.

48| Craig Grant (86.143.71.252) 2010-02-20 14:14:09

Sh1t pitch will make it hard for players tomorrow so I fully expect to see Pav thrown in and then slated by Harry if he struggles.

49| MKYid (90.218.59.208) 2010-02-20 18:39:20

I'd like to think Pav will get his game, play well and score a couple, but will he? It's not like he's looking to impress Redknapp, he seems totaly disillusioned with life at Spurs...are we really going to expect a great performance from him? Despite his's critisisms of Redknapp, Pav has said he appreciates the support he's had from the fans...lets hope he can turn on the style for us!

50| nobby nobbs (82.0.227.193) 2010-02-20 21:16:55

Well given that Pav stepped off the bench against Leeds and scored ,I hope so too. The fact is he will have to be the best player on the park to impress redknapp,i dont believe palacios speaks english at all well redknapp doesnt pull his chain though does he.I reckon Redknapp needs to flog a couple to rebuild his west ham faves.Fourth or Eighth or bye bye Fiddler.

51| Alan (87.74.138.173) 2010-02-21 16:15:18

Doesn't look like Wigan are blessed with a lot of pace in defence so hopefully Defoe can exploit that. With that and the state of the pitch, long ball tactics may not be a bad idea.

52| Craig Grant (86.143.71.252) 2010-02-21 18:24:43

Fantastic from Pav !! Technically the best forward we have at the club by some distance. Put your arm around him Harry.

53| MKYid (90.218.59.208) 2010-02-21 18:25:55

Excellent result...really pleased for Pav!!

54| andrew coy (86.155.53.229) 2010-02-21 18:32:00

super super pav super pavalova harry has to play him and defoe not tongue out crouch when ever he misses

55| TENCHMAN (94.168.127.2) 2010-02-21 18:38:45

superrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr super pav

that pitch was worse than my local park -well done lads
great result at city for us

lennon back wednesday

COYSPURS

56| Peter (81.106.190.154) 2010-02-21 18:49:40

I like Crouch but it is time that Harry gave Pav and Defoe a run together - use Crouch in the last 20 mins if we need a change - But I get the feeling That harry is not a big Pav fan and won't have the balls to make the change!!!!!!!!!! anyway well done lads (even the thought of work tomorrow doesn't seem that bad when we win)COYS

57| big mart (86.18.246.181) 2010-02-21 18:55:31

elements of grit from same people, same plodding from tom looks like the honey monster more each game, needs a rest.
please explain how mod and kranks can play together for croatia but not for spurs?!!!. we need drive and purpose in midfield not the jenas square ball negativaty, tom has become jjmk 2.
the differance when mod and pav came on was positive football, going forward,we have to be positive or we go down like a helter skelter,
gud and pav wednesday? no chance.

58| Alan (87.74.138.173) 2010-02-21 19:25:17

Rather than putting an arm around him, harry should keep insulting himm maybe slap him around a little. Evidently it helps get the best out him!

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-1093181/Moody-Pavlyuchenko-needs-slap-Romans-ex-boss-urges-Redknapp-tough-Spurs-star.html

59| Perry Man (86.46.137.158) 2010-02-21 19:38:13

All our bad luck and bad decisions etc came around today. Defoe's first makes up for the disallowed goal against pool. I know we won 3-0 but that goal was crucial. Well done Pav. A fans favourite he has to start more.

60| wert (81.111.219.117) 2010-02-21 19:40:46

Pav is the only player playing for the fans and thats what harry doesnt like!

61| MKYid (90.218.59.208) 2010-02-21 20:39:13

I'm begining to rethink my stance on King. I appreciate he's a top defender but so often he doesn't survive the 90 minutes and Bassong always seems to need a few minutes to get into the game...we look too vulnerable for a period after the change, maybe we'd be better sticking with Daws and Bassong, let them continue their partnership (a partnership that was doing well)and use King when injuries happen to either of them.

62| Perry Man (86.46.137.158) 2010-02-21 21:14:02

I'm with you MK. Switching your centrebacks is looking for trouble. They had five clean sheets in a row together. I say let them keep the partnership together. Delighted with that win. It's a tough place to get one. Onwards and ... well stay where we are. COYS.

63| Alan (87.74.138.173) 2010-02-21 21:40:47

The problem is that Bassong on the same side as Bale is a little too shakey. They don't communicate with each other and it's a case of after you. I am not confident they are ready to cope regularly without King. Not sure if the 5 clean sheets in a row was with BAE as left back?

64| mdb (89.168.56.114) 2010-02-21 21:46:19

well done Pav.
not too sure he'll start the next game but all he can do is score when he plays. even Harry can't ask for more than that.

65| mdb (89.168.56.114) 2010-02-21 21:49:31

and I'm for Daws Bassong for all the games. we need some consistency for the end of the season. Its going to be tight to the end. we could do with our CB's fully together before we play the top 3 in April.
COYS!!

66| wert (81.111.219.117) 2010-02-21 22:07:48

Wigan only looked like scoring when king went off so for me if king is fit he plays if we actually sign a player than can come in and out and out replace king with immediate affect then fair enough but i look at corluka, dawson, bassong and bae/bale and see a very week backline. 5 clean sheets against who?

67| Ron Croatia (79.67.210.69) 2010-02-21 23:34:38

Slaven Billic for our manager in two seasons when Harry has done his three years. That way our world class Modric will stay. And he'll get the best out of the rest of our Balkan bunch. I know it was only Wigan today but Modders finally looked like his old self. He truly is outstanding. Easily as good as Fabregas and got stuck in for Pav's first today as well. Battling performance from us. Coys.

68| nobby nobbs (82.0.227.193) 2010-02-22 07:47:02

FFS King is finished the only reason we look weak down the left is because Bale bombs on.I'd take Bassong and Dawson all day everyday, so they can establish a partnership.
Good win on a shite pitch. Well done Pav and Modric. To see football on that surface was incredible.
They didnt get alot down the right with Bentley infront of Corluka.

69| MKYid (90.218.59.208) 2010-02-22 08:15:11

just read this elsewhere... "Crouch has 2 goals and 1 assist - involved in 3 goals in his last 935 minutes.
Pavlyuchenko has 3 goals and 0 assists - involved in 3 goals in his last 38 minutes.
These are excluding added time, mind you, and according to ESPN."

70| YiddenAgenda (62.77.175.114) 2010-02-22 08:16:32

It just goes to show if you're good enough you can play on any surface. Well done Roman Luka!
Was worried before either came on that it wouldn't be their type of pitch, but class shone through.
Was rather disappointed in Harrys interview after the game - thought it was rather childish to still try get a little dig in at Pav.
"He's a great player when he tries."
Fcuk sake, just get over whatever chip you have (obviously did with Bentley, although probably forced into that with Lennon situation) and give him his shot.

71| YiddenAgenda (62.77.175.114) 2010-02-22 08:17:26

Great stats MK, Alan would be proud of them -)

72| nobby nobbs (82.0.227.193) 2010-02-22 08:32:29

Did anyone see the tele when Pav scored his 2nd Redknapp looked rueful rather than happy. Dr Strangelove.

73| YiddenAgenda (62.77.175.114) 2010-02-22 08:56:17

Looked like he was chewing the inside of his jowels off

74| yiddo1882 (188.221.9.148) 2010-02-22 09:08:20

Whether a Pav fan or not, he certainly has deserved an opportunity and has not deserved the treatment that Redknapp has given him. Certainly the reaction of the players yesterday showed what side they are on!

75| MKYid (90.218.59.208) 2010-02-22 10:22:02

Tell you what Nobby, I did see Redknapps face...it wasn't the expression of someone who's team had just gone 3 up and it wasn't the expression of someone who'd had his tactical decisions vindicated. Mind you Harry has looked so disinterested in the dugout of late I'm not surprised he showed so little emotion.

76| Alan (87.74.138.173) 2010-02-22 10:42:45

I don't think his demeanor has anything to do with Pav (he's dealt with far worse characters than him and wanted to sign Bellamy!) or football. The court case has weighed heavy on his mind since he was charged. He looks like a guilty man to me or just very fed up with it all. Increasingly I am thinking I would be more surprised if he was at spurs in 12 months time than not. Especially if we don't get champions league I can see him walking away from management.

77| Simon (148.106.128.38) 2010-02-22 11:08:44

Alan I dont think this court case is the reason for his grumpiness... He will have a good idea of where he stands on that. I think his ticker is about to give out, hence why Jordan and Bond are now his mouthpieces on the touchline and he just sits there farting...

78| Alan (87.74.138.173) 2010-02-22 11:14:11

That would explain why Pav wants to play. The smell on the bench must be unbearable!

79| nobby nobbs (82.0.227.193) 2010-02-22 11:21:23

yep nearly as bad as Fratton Park, its when harry starts fulling his pants our form will rocket.

80| wert (81.111.219.117) 2010-02-22 12:06:58

Court case wouldnt it be more of a pay us what you owe and dont do it again Bagpuss??

Anyone else frustrated with Dawson's inability to play a 5-10 yard pass. Granted he's put in some stella performances at the back and can defend til his hearts content, but why is it whenever he gets the ball, unopposed or opposed does he feel the need to keep lumping balls up to the other end of the pitch? Unless harry's told him to do it of course. It's so frustrating to watch as everybody else in the team seems comfortable on the ball but the minute he gets it at his feet he looks shaky and void of any ideas so decides to lump it. I'm taking away Dawsons ability to defend I just don't think he's a ball playing centre half. Anyone else agree with me on this one?

82| AlabamaBlackSnake (212.85.14.107) 2010-02-22 12:22:39

Typo... I'm NOT taking away

83| COME ON YOU SPURS (212.159.24.238) 2010-02-22 12:35:04

Could be worse we could ve bought back Kaboul oh wait...

84| COME ON YOU SPURS (212.159.24.238) 2010-02-22 12:36:38

Guus Hiddink for manager

85| yiddo1882 (188.221.9.148) 2010-02-22 12:37:35

Al...Dawson probabaly has a more success rate at passing than Wilson!

I like Palicious but if you take away his graft (which is needed as a balance to the team) and jusge him as a footballer he is incredibly average. He gets caught in possesion, gives away unecessary free kicks, collects needless bookings and his passing makes Zokora's looks like Glenn Hoddle's!!

86| Yiddo1882 (188.221.9.148) 2010-02-22 12:40:11

COYS...Well if you believe reports over the weekend Mourinho, Mancini and O'Neil could be looking for new clubs in the summer! Add Moyes tgo those three and I would be happy with one of those 4 taking over from Redknapp

87| Big mart (86.18.246.181) 2010-02-22 13:31:45

THE SLIGHT PROBLEM WITH THE WILS IS TRYING TO WIN BALLS THAT ARE NOT THERE TO BE WON!JUST USE PACE TO GET GOAL SIDE AS YOU LEARN WHEN YOUR 10 YEARS OLD,WE HAVE THE PLAYERS TO FINISH FOURTH BUT ALWAYS HAVE TWO ON THE BENCH LISTENING TO BILIC LAST NIGHT,MODRIC IN CENTRE KRANKS ON LEFT AS I SAID WEEKS AGO. WILS ON FRONT OF BACK 4,GET A NEW COACH.
AND GRAB FOURTH NOW.NOT IN 4 WEEKS WHEN ITS TO LATE!!! COME ON BOYS

88| Spezza THFC (194.131.213.33) 2010-02-22 13:49:31

Yiddo1882... I do disagree slightly on the Palacios/Zokora passing comparison. I have seen Palacios play some lovely 'thru the eye of a needle through' balls to our strikers...Zokora was just shocking at everything!! I think some of the time why he loses possession is that he tries too hard to play an 'effective pass' rather than a safe pass... this is because he probably does not have the confidence in our other central midfielders to do that (Thudd included)... and feels he needs to everything himself. Until we get that midfield partner for him he will try and do 2 men's job admirably... oh, and please drop Crouch, 'Arry... 20-25 mins as sub only.

89| Topspur (141.228.106.147) 2010-02-22 13:52:11

Spezza, Palacious gives the ball away, ususally after attempting to play a relatively simple pass. I am shocked that you have somehow linked this back to being Hudd's fault!

90| COME ON YOU SPURS (212.159.24.238) 2010-02-22 14:02:16

Forget Hudd and Palacious Kaboul can play in midfield. Oh Dear!

91| COME ON YOU SPURS (212.159.24.238) 2010-02-22 14:10:08

Realistically where do you see spurs finishing this season? Id go with 7th and I can t see us getting to Fa cup final either.

92| MKYid (90.218.59.208) 2010-02-22 14:59:34

I doubt we'll get past Bolton in the cup. After playing on that pitch at Wigan, Hudd and Palacios are going to be feeling drained, I doubt they'll both be recovered by wednesday, so what do we do, play JJ?!!

93| COME ON YOU SPURS (212.159.24.238) 2010-02-22 15:04:55

Kaboul and JJ in the middle?

94| MKYid (90.218.59.208) 2010-02-22 16:24:01

ha ha ha ha ha....oh wait, you're being serious? Er...not for me, maybe Kaboul and Modric?...I dunno really, I've never seen Kaboul play CM.

95| Spezza THFC (194.131.213.33) 2010-02-22 16:32:42

Well, I just don't like the way some people are being negative about Palacios.. me personally, I think he has been one our most important signings in the last 5 or so years.. and on Thudd, I was a big fan of his over the time he's been here, with his few cameo performances here and there. I said he needs a good run in the team... Well he has had nearly a full season as 1st choice and I'm afraid he ain't got it!... if we want to crack the top 4, that is. I believe he has more yellows than Palacios too this season, which seems to highlight his bad positioning.

96| Spezza THFC (194.131.213.33) 2010-02-22 16:33:38

...and lack of mobility

97| Topspur (141.228.106.150) 2010-02-22 16:50:57

Well, I just don't like the way some people are being negative about Huddlestone!! He always receives critical reviews. He is a solid player, who's tackling and work ethic have improved a great deal this term to add to his superb passing and shooting abilities....

98| nobby nobbs (82.0.227.193) 2010-02-22 16:56:51

palacios is massive for us. the farce of not playing him first half against Wolves was proved by the scoreline. I suspect he has more technical ability than he shows. Should we ever get appropriate support in CM we may see more of that.
Use O'hara to put pressure on Thud , if O'hara does well when he gets on the park play him.
Having said that the middle of the park was a bog, huddlestone isnt to blame for that.Is rugby played on that pitch ? I saw some other markings.

99| MKYid (90.218.59.208) 2010-02-22 17:03:45

They do play rugby on that pitch Nobby.

I don't see how Hudd isn't good enough if we want to be a top 4 team....we're currently in the top 4 and Hudd has been a regular in the midfield...go figure?! Don't get me wrong, I think we could do with another midfielder but there are others who should be replaced before Hudd.

100| Spezza THFC (194.131.213.33) 2010-02-22 17:08:35

Topspur...so, when you say shooting abilities.. Do the stats back that up?...No, didn't think so. Don't get me wrong... WHEN he strikes a ball that is ON target, yeah he has got power and technique. But the shots/goals ratio stats must be poor.

101| raver (213.94.183.138) 2010-02-22 17:11:10

modric ran the show when he came on. start him in cen mid with Palacios.

102| Spezza THFC (194.131.213.33) 2010-02-22 17:15:30

I think Modders or Kranjcar should be given the rest of the season with Wilson. I just don't think Palacios and Thudd are a good partnership, as they both sit deep. we need a midfielder to break into the box and score GOALS.. give the opposition something to think about other than defending a Crouch knock on to Defoe... too easy to defend against.

103| nobby nobbs (82.0.227.193) 2010-02-22 17:28:38

They have been sitting deep because possession was given back to the opposition very quickly and cheaply because of our long ball tactic.
Depending on how quickly the opposition move the ball out dictated (dictates) where palacios would play.
MK Yid I feel Huddlestone is too inconsisitent to be secure of his place. Crouch is also a regular in our team....Ive figured.Of the two Huddlestone is the more important, for me.

104| Canuck Yid (64.231.86.143) 2010-02-22 18:13:01

Modric and Palacios in centre of midfield. Pavlyuchenko and Defoe at striker. Dawson told to stop launching balls over the midfield (or at least cut it down to say 10 times per game). Seems pretty simple. Why not give it a try? What am I missing?

105| MKYid (90.218.59.208) 2010-02-22 18:28:31

I've seen Hudd get forward plenty of times, I think he's tireing a bit as the season is wearing on and we could run into trouble because we don't have a replacement. As much as I'd like to see Mods there with Kranjcar and Pav up front with Defoe or any other alternative line-ups maybe including Gudjohnsen, I don't think we should be making a huge amount of changes within the team at this stage of the season.

106| Alfie Conns Sideburns (92.239.161.55) 2010-02-22 18:50:47

When Modric came on, he seemed to have a free role, and was often in the centre of midfield. Whether that was the tactic or he just did what he wanted I don't know, but he is by far and above our most creative player. Whoever said that Thudd sits deep is right, which means he is often trying to play a long pass, which is good when they come off, but when most of our passes are long, they are easier for opposing defences to read, if you get my drift.

107| mdb (89.168.56.114) 2010-02-22 21:20:57

Gomes,
Charlie, Daws, Bassong, Bale
Bentley, Palacios, Modric, Kranjcar
Pav Defoe

that team starts every game until someone is injured.
come on Harry you know it makes sense

COYS!!

108| tenchman (94.168.127.2) 2010-02-22 21:30:30

crouch has been awful in the last few games -his control is terrible -he keeps missing simple chances and i think its time to put him back on the bench as the last 20 minutes man .
pav has more control and let him have a run in the side.

modric was a class act , so is bale atm.

dont like the rumours im hearing about lennon -please can we see him start a match again he is important to us as fabregas is to sc .

109| mdb (89.168.56.114) 2010-02-22 21:41:12

if reports are to be believed....Lennon is out for another couple of months

110| MKYid (90.218.59.208) 2010-02-22 21:42:37

Not a bad side mdb but all the quality is on the left!

111| Alan (87.74.138.173) 2010-02-22 22:08:50

If the reports about Lennon are correct then someone should review our medical department. They've failed to properly diagnose Woodgate, Modric and now Lennon all in one season.

112| yiddo1882 (188.221.9.148) 2010-02-23 09:23:56

Al...Whereas I agree with the Woody and Lennon view I think it is harsh regarding Modric. He had a broken leg and he took a little longer than expected. The diagnosis was correct (broken leg) it was just the recovery time which is always an estimate not an exact science.

113| Alan (87.74.138.173) 2010-02-23 10:00:09

True Yiddo, my terminology is not correct. They seem to get the forecast for recovery time wrong rather than the diagnosis. It's just frustrating as it tends to be one more week, one more week and then , harry comes out with 'he's a long way away'.

114| yiddo1882 (188.221.9.148) 2010-02-23 10:04:27

The Lennon one is annoying. I am never 100% convinced that reat is the solution, as it is unknown how long it can take. At least with the operation you have an idea how long they are out and you like to believe the op will solve the problem permantely.

115| Alan (87.74.138.173) 2010-02-23 10:10:35

At the time of the injury I went onto a site called physioroom.com or something and read up on the injury (sad I know) and if it is more a hernia injury then surgery is inevitable. You can delay it by conditioning the area but in a World Cup year, Lennon would not be keen on that (i think). I am just speculating but I think we took risk in the hope that condition would get him through but it's backfired and we have probably lost a month now as he could have had the op and faced the two months out from December. I guess we'll await news later today.

116| yiddo1882 (188.221.9.148) 2010-02-23 10:20:22

Lennon missed a few games at the end of last season with a Hernia problem. Considering he was missing the last few games of the season and with the summer break I thought an op then would have been better than rest!
